Workshop in Cartographic Design for History (Special Two-part Session)
Ted Koch, State Cartographer for the State of Wisconsin, will lead two workshops on cartographic design for historical research at this year’s SSHA conference in Chicago. This is a rare opportunity to get mapping advice from someone who specializes in helping non-geographers make effective maps with GIS.
Workshop in Cartography Design for History, Part I: How to
Make Effective Thematic Maps (Sat., Nov. 17, 1:00 - 3:00pm)
In a richly illustrated presentation, Wisconsin State
Cartographer Ted Koch will explain the principles of cartographic design, with
an emphasis on how to make effective thematic maps. The presentation will include instructive
handouts that provide basic guidelines on design to improve maps for
publication and teaching. The session is genetic in nature, and does not cover the use of GIS
software.
Workshop in Cartographic Design for History, Part II: Map
Critique Session (Sat., Nov. 17, 3:15 - 5:15pm)
In this session, using the design principles covered in Part I, Koch will assist small groups by presenting an interactive and positive critique of maps brought by workshop participants. Finished or draft maps can be grist for the mill. Please bring your favorite map and display it proudly!
